At 4, Cece contracted meningitis, leaving her profoundly deaf. Using humor and whimsy (her characters all look like bunnies), she shows us how she adapts to deafness, learns to lip read and uses her assistive Phonic Ear.

Luckily, Cece discovers her “superpower,” she can hear her teacher from anywhere in the building (even in the teachers lounge and the bathroom). Thus, she becomes El Deafo, her superhero alter-ego, who can face any situation with humor and grace.

We love this empowering a autobiography because it speaks to feeling different. Great discussion topics include loneliness, resilience and friendship. One note: there is mention of Cece having a crush on a boy.

This book is recommended for kids 8+
